[Commonplace book], [ca. 1857].

Manuscript, in multiple hands, of a collection of several hundred verse and prose entries, including poems by various authors on such serious subjects as the deaths of loved ones, friendship, and the passage of time, including a poem by Longfellow and numerous poems by Byron; as well as more lighthearted poems, riddles, and epigrams such as A Tradesman's Puff-Going Out To Tea; A Receipt for Sallad; and How to Disappoint a Wife. Printed newspaper clippings are pasted throughout, addressing such topics as Moral Recipes for a Happy New Year and Maxims That Will Do At Any Season. One printed poem, tipped in, is titled Times Are Changed: Or, The Museudeum, Sung With Great Applause at That Fashionable Assembly, with the note "Written by my Father. W. L."; the name William Leyburn appears elsewhere in the manuscript.
